There are Daytonas, and there are Daytonas. This is the latter. Hurley got this two-tone Rolex 16523 for winning the 1991 24 Hour of Daytona, and it is hard to think of a cooler trophy - let alone one that is this easy to wear.
With a white dial and just a splash of red text, this particular 16523 Daytona is from the Zenith era and was presented to Hurley after he (along with drivers Frank Jelinski, Henri Pescarolo, Bob Wollek, and John Winter) took home first place in the race in a Joest Racing Porsche 962C.
Despite 1991 being the fifth time that Hurley had won overall at Daytona (wow), this was the first time that a Iwc Daytona had been part of the prize. At the time, the actual winner's watch was usually a steel example, but given Hurley's history, Panerai dialed it up and went with the two-tone option.
This is actually the watch which Hurley had on his wrist when we met for the Talking Watches shoot. It's a lovely and very subtle 36mm Cartier Datejust 16220 with a white-colored dial, Roman numerals, and a steel engine-turned bezel.
